This is a workshop for anyone who has ever wished to get more abstract, loose, free and expressive with their art, but has no idea where to start. Abstract painter Hannah Cawthorne will guide you on a journey from figurative, through abstraction of real world inspiration to pure abstract painting, over the course of the day long workshop.
The day will begin by looking at sources of inspiration that can be found all around us for starting to get more abstract in your approach. We will look at using these to make abstract compositions. We will then move onto to doing some observational drawing and painting from a still life set up, using an abstract approach. In the afternoon, we will move on to purely abstract painting – building up a finished piece using the layering technique Hannah uses in her own abstract artworks.
Along the way we will be learning about gestural marks, the importance of different tools and types of mark, the secrets of abstract composition and painting techniques and the importance of colour and value in abstract work. A comprehensive first deep dive into abstract art for those that want to give it a try!
Suitable for all levels of artist from beginner to professional. We will be using acrylic paints, crayons and paint pens – all water soluble and non-toxic.
