Procreate Possibilities: A Beginners Guide for Traditional Artists

This special workshop is perfect for any artist looking to discover how they can use Procreate within their traditional art practice, and is suitable for beginners or anyone who would like to learn the basics of the app. My workshop will encourage you to experiment, play and make mistakes, as this will help you learn to create and edit using this amazing app, whilst avoiding the overwhelm of trying to master too many new things.

Procreate is like having a complete art studio at your fingertips and can be used to create anything from sketches and compositional drawings through to rich digital paintings and illustrations. It’s also the perfect companion for when you have limited time and space to work with traditional methods, plus you can take it anywhere!

The first half of the day will give you a hands-on introduction to using Procreate on the iPad, getting to grips with your Apple Pencil, setting up new documents and exploring the basics of brushes, colours, layers and selection tools. I’ll also be showing you a variety of mark making techniques and fun ideas for you to try out for yourself, helping to guide you through the process of creating your own simple digital artwork.

After a short lunch break we will delve into fun experimentation, looking at ways to enhance your existing artwork by incorporating digital elements, and also how to use your existing artwork and traditionally created textures to create exciting new digital designs.

This 6 hour class is perfect for beginners and those with very basic Procreate knowledge, as I will be guiding you through some of the most frequently used tools that you will need to get started.

Workshop Requirements:
• You must bring along you own fully charged iPad and compatible iPencil. Please note that third-party styluses may not supported by Procreate, so please check your pencil’s compatibility before the workshop.
• You must ensure that you have the Procreate app installed on your iPad ready to begin your workshop session and that it successfully opens on your ipad. If you don’t have it already, Procreate can be downloaded through the Apple Store (currently costing £12.99).
• Please feel free to bring along a couple of pieces of your own existing artwork or textures, that you might like to experiment with. I will also supply some hand painted textures that can be used during the workshop.

Please note:
• If you prefer to use an iPad rest, support or stand please bring this with you to the session. Similarly, if you wish to work with a glove or screen protector, please bring these along. As these are down to personal preference, they won’t be supplied for the workshop.
• iPad’s and their accessories are expensive items and although the workshop size is limited to a small group, you are reminded to please keep your equipment safe and within sight at all times.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available during short comfort breaks throughout the session, allowing for a quick stretch and break from your screen. There will be also be a short lunch break in the middle of the class, so feel free to bring lunch with you.

You will be welcome to print out A4 copies of your experimentations and creations to take home.

About Mel Langton:

I’m a designer and illustrator who works in Procreate as part of my professional art practice, using it to create much of my commissioned illustration work. I also love to create artwork using traditional methods but believe that digital artwork can be a wonderful way to experiment, play, plan, enhance and compliment that work.
